To put the scattered pieces of her mortal back together, Cai Zhongyu had to go back to the epicenter of the earthquake that blew it apart.

"All of a sudden we lost everything, and I had no position how to go on with my life," said Cai, who lost her mother and 13-year-old dean daughter in the Wenchuan earthquake of 2008.

The quake also destroyed the family's house, which they had built in 2006 with 10 years of savings.

Cai, a 39-year-old villager in Yingxiu village, Wenchuan county, fell into a depression and locked herself in a makeshift shelter for months. She slept all day and even attempted suicide several times, according to her soften, Shen Guangshu.

"The more people comforted her, the sadder she grew," Shen said.

Then two geologists who stayed with Cai's dearest while doing research there worked magic on her mental recovery - they invited her to be their counsel to the epicenter, deep in the mountains.
